According to the author, Keith B. Poole, the apparition of 'Old Tanner', resplendent in knee breaches, wanders "aimlessly" through the churchyard.

Hampstead Norreys (alternatively spelt Hampstead Norris as it is pronounced) is a village in Berkshire, England.

It lies on the small tributary the River Pang, north of Newbury.
